Live from the headquarters of Canadian Liberal Party where party leader Mark Carney is expected to address supporters and the headquarters of the Canadian Conservative Party where leader Pierre Poilievre is expected to address his supporters.
Canadians voted today in a general election pitting Carney’s Liberals against the Conservatives of Pierre Poilievre. Polls are beginning to close in Canada as voters nationwide headed to the polls to decide whether to extend the Liberal party’s decade in power or hand control to the Conservative party.
A record 7.3 million people had already cast their ballots in advance polls before election day, according to Elections Canada. Canada has 28.9 million eligible voters. Election day falls on a day of mourning after 11 people were killed and dozens of others injured when a driver ploughed a car into a crowd at a street festival in Vancouver on Saturday evening.
In the past few months, the Liberal Party has made a remarkable comeback and is now leading in the polls. Heading into 2025, the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre had dominated in the polls. But a series of events — including President Trump’s tariffs and threats to Canadian sovereignty, and the resignation of Justin Trudeau, the increasingly unpopular prime minister — boosted the chances of the Liberals and new prime minister, Mark Carney.
Liberal Party leader Mark Carney, who took over as prime minister from Justin Trudeau last month, says he is the ideal choice to confront US President Donald Trump with his experience as a central banker during periods of economic upheaval.
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has also promised to stand firm against Trump, but argues that a decade of weak economic performance under the Trudeau-led Liberals left Canada vulnerable to hostile US trade policies.
Polls show Liberals leading with nearly 43 percent, above Conservatives at over 39 percent, according to a CBC tracker. The New Democratic Party was polling in third at about 9 percent, followed by Bloc Quebecois at 6 percent.
