Food Party Tala

Tala is the term used in the Indian classical music system for the rhythmic pattern of a composition. This recitation is in a sixteen-beat-long pattern called teental, and includes several shifts in speed, and two tihais.

This was my final project for my CalArts Tala class, spring 2014. The class was co-taught by Randy Gloss and Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, and I am indescribably grateful to have been introduced to talas by such world-class instructors.

I was fortunate this recitation was not a public performance. I misread a few of the words in the final tihai, causing it to be a couple beats short. But I really enjoyed composing the piece, and hope you enjoy this clip, imperfect as it is. Many thanks to Josh Linksy for catching it on video.
