There Will Never Be Another Jamaal Wilkes
Jamaal Wilkes was one of the smoothest basketball players who ever lived.
Before the Showtime Lakers became one of the most iconic teams in NBA history, before Magic Johnson turned Los Angeles into a basketball circus, and before Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s skyhook became the symbol of an entire era, Jamaal Wilkes was already quietly winning everywhere he went.
At UCLA, he played under John Wooden and became part of one of the greatest dynasties college basketball has ever seen. In Golden State, he helped the Warriors shock the basketball world and win the 1975 NBA championship. And in Los Angeles, he became one of the most underrated pieces of the Showtime Lakers — the elegant scorer on the wing who could run the floor, defend, cut, finish, and hit that strange, unforgettable jump shot that somehow always seemed to fall.
They called him “Silk” for a reason.
Wilkes didn’t play like a man trying to prove how great he was. He played like a man who already knew exactly what the game needed from him. He wasn’t the loudest star. He wasn’t the biggest personality. And next to Magic, Kareem, James Worthy, and the bright lights of Los Angeles, it was easy for casual fans to overlook him.
But look at the résumé, and it becomes impossible to ignore.
NCAA champion. NBA champion. All-Star. Hall of Famer. A winner at every level. A player trusted by John Wooden, Al Attles, Pat Riley, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. A man whose greatness was never built on noise — only results.
This is the story of Jamaal “Silk” Wilkes — the forgotten Lakers legend whose game looked effortless, whose jump shot looked impossible, and whose quiet greatness helped shape one of the most famous teams in basketball history.
