A winter storm is an event that forms the types of rainfall that only occur at low temperatures, such as snow or blizzard, or a rain that is low enough to form ice (ie, icy rain) at ground temperatures. In temperate continental climates, these storms are not necessarily limited to the winter season, but can also occur in late autumn and spring. It is very rare for summer to form, although it should be an unusually cold summer, such as the 1816 summer in the northeastern United States.
