Should You Use llms.txt? Google's Mixed Signals

In May 2026, Google's Chrome team added an llms.txt check to Lighthouse's agentic browsing audit, while Google Search said it doesn't use the file and you don't need it. Two official messages, opposite directions.

👉 The contradiction: Chrome's agentic audit treats llms.txt as relevant, while Google Search says it isn't used for training.
👉 The guidance gap: the official AI guide says skip it, yet another Google agentic guide says have one.
👉 Mike's verdict: it's worth using at this point, just don't pour a lot of effort into it.

Low effort, low risk, potential upside. Add it and move on.
