How to used clip and buffer in ArcGIS

This exercise introduces you to viewing and using different tools, work with attribute table, identifying and locating features, adding and managing data layers, adding and managing data frames in ArcMap.

1. Start ArcMap
2. Click on Blank Map
3. On the Standard toolbar, click the Add Data button
4. In the Add Data dialog, navigate to “Nepaldata” folder. Select all the datasets and layers of “Nepaldata” and click Add.

Now we learn managing data layers.

1. Turn layers on and off (Use check Boxes)
2. Display or hide layer’s legend (Use + and – signs besides the desired layer)
3. Observe that when we add data, the data layers are displayed in a position based on hierarchy points then lines then finally polygons.
4. Change order of drawing map layers (To change order drag the desired layer in new position in Table of contents)
5. Now play with different buttons on tools like Zoom in, Zoom out, pan, Select features etc.
6. Copy and remove layers from map (Click the layer then right click)
7. Create Group Layers and adding data to the new created group layer:
• Right click on Data Frame name and click on New Group Layer.
• To add data to the created group layer
 Drag and drop the desired layers under group layer
 Or Right Click on the group layer then click on Add Data. Add Data Dialog shall appear then browse the desired data and add them.

Managing Data Frames

1. By default when we open AcrMapdata frame called “Layers” is created.
2. To Add New Data Frame: _Insert _Data Frame (New data frame shall be created at the bottom)
3. Rename the New Data Frame: _Click the New Data Frame _Right Click _Click on Properties _Click on General Tab _ Provide desired name.
4. Copy any layer from the data frame “Layers” (Step 6 of managing data layers) then click the newly created Data Frame _Right Click _ Click on Paste layer(s).
5. To activate desired data frame _Click the data frame _Right Click _Activate
6.You can also Add data, create new group layer, copy, remove, change properties of data frame by right clicking on the desired data frame.

Setting scale (To determine geographic area that is displayed on map)

1. Type the desired scale in scale box on the Standard toolbar.
2. Drop-down box lets you pick from standard map scale.

Use layer “Districts” for the following:

1. Try to change colors and symbols of different features from symbology.
2. Label layer from properties/label. Try to label with different attributes (from Labels tab of Layer Properties dialogue box, select desired attribute in Label Field).
3. Select different features from selection/Select by attributes and select by locations. Export the selected features.
4. To select any district only (For now Kavrepalanchowk), select that district and export as shape file.
5. Clip road and rivers of that district from Arc toolbox _Analysis Tools _Extract _Clip
6. Select any other district adjacent to Kavre district as well and export as shape file. Clip road and river of that district as before.
7. Merge the clipped roads and clipped rivers of the those two districts from Arc toolbox _Data Management Tools _General _Merge
Use layer “RoadNetwork2006” for the following:

1. To show map tips: Click on the layer_ Right click _ Click on Properties _ Click on Display tab_Tick on Show Map Tips _Click on Field tab and select Primary Display Field.
2. Make buffer of road using buffer tool of Arc toolbox _Analysis Tools _Proximity _Buffer.

Identify and locating feature:

1. To identify any feature use Identify tool.
2. To locate feature use find in the edit menu. You can then flash it on the map and zoom to the feature.
