Bryte Devotions: Be Like Children

Speaker: Greg Tovmassian
Passage: Matthew 18:1-4

Be like children
Motive: last week I caught myself being less satisfied (or even unsatisfied) with certain accomplishments that I didn't even dream of achieving when I was a kid.

Bible passage: Matthew 18:1-4: At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Supporting passage: Matthew 19:14: but Jesus said “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.”

As you all know, we are currently going through the book of Matthew, so this is a bit of a sneak peek, actually a teaser, of what our preachers will be sharing in greater detail.

Why does Jesus set children as the “Gold standard”, a high bar to reach?
Let's analyze typical children's characteristics:
Children are far more humble, (less prideful) than adults
Happy to be surrounded by peers, not looking to get ahead/above
Not afraid to ask for help, which reveals their weaknesses/insecurities
Celebrate and are satisfied with even the smallest achievements
As adults, we are often fall into the “Never enough” mentality in many aspects of life

Children are far less anxious about life
Eat, Play, Sleep, Repeat
They rely on their parents to provide their bare necessities (not to be confused with bear necessities) -haha
Ben Dronov said a great sermon recently about being anxious, which included Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Children are quick to forgive
Conflicts resolve quickly and without “grudges”
Whether it’s about a toy or a candy, rarely does it have long term consequences

Children believe…
Believe and trust parents (unconditionally), until trust is lost of course.
Eric's spelling example?
We need to believe and trust our Lord and Saviour unconditionally, especially since he will never disappoint or give a reason to lose trust.

Children are inherently joyful
Do not need much to be joyful

Children are very open about their needs/wants
Phillipians 4:6: do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

In conclusion, let's all strive to “become like children” in the mentioned ways “as for such belongs the Kingdom of Heaven”
