BARN to be WILD! 😻 Lucy's Journey from Feral to Farm Cat Heaven

When Lucy was found living as a stray in a backyard shed with her four kittens, the homeowners just wanted her gone. They were about to call animal control and have her hauled off - which most likely meant she'd be euthanized. We were not about to let that happen! Her kittens were old enough to be adopted, but Lucy was terrified of people and would climb up the sides of her crate in panic whenever we approached. While we looked for a feral cat colony for her to join, the weeks went by and little by little, Lucy started to come out of her shell. With patience and a lot of kitty treats, she started allowing me to pet her, and even learned to enjoy it! When my sister arrived for a visit, she took one look at Lucy's sweet face and decided she wanted her to some be her barn cat on her farm nestled in the hills outside of Asheville, North Carolina. So Lucy and I jumped on a plane and when we landed, Lucy started her brand new life among horses, sheep, goats, and even a family of peacocks!

Here at Kitten School, we are strong advocates of TNR programs to help save feral cat colonies. This stands for Trap, Neuter, and Release and is an option for feral cats who might otherwise be euthanized. Some feral cats, like Lucy, can be socialized to enjoy human companionship; others never do. It took almost four months of daily interaction with Lucy to get her from hissing and terrified to affectionate and relaxed around people. She now runs when she hears Laura come to the barn wanting to be petted! This video proves that even cats who seem "wild" can eventually learn to be friendly. Not every cat is lucky enough to find a home as loving and beautiful as Lucy's, but I hope her story is an inspiration for cat lovers all over the world.
