Today, we'll be talking about the real life Necropolist Wannabe, better known as Anatoly Moskvin. Stay until the end of our video to learn all about this bone chilling case, and also subscribe to our channel for more videos like this one.
Anatoly Moskvin made headlines because he was originally suspected to rob graves and make life-size dolls from mummified female corpses, back in 2012. Unlike other criminals that we've examined in our other videos, Anatoly Moskvin certainly did not fit a traditional criminal profile. He was a Russian philologist born in September 1966, who worked as a historian and linguist in Nizhny Novgorod. At age 45, Anatoly had been investigated by the police after the locals reported a spate of grave desecrations in their neighborhood.
However, let's take a look at Moskvin's background to better understand his psyche. He had graduated from the Philological faculty of the Moscow State University and became renowned among academic circles. His main areas of focus had been history and folklore, as well as languages and linguistics. He had a lot of interest in cemeteries, burial rituals and death.
He was attracted by all things occult and supposedly kept a library of around 60,000 books and documents for himself, on top of his infamous doll collection. In fact, some academics claimed that he was a genius corrupted by the dark side, which might seem like a bit of an exaggerated explanation with a slight touch of reality. On top of that, Moskvin had a very secluded life and preferred to live with his parents. He never married or dated anybody, and he abstainted from drinking alcohol, smoking or doing drugs. Some even said that he was a virgin. Despite this, later reports such as one in 2016 claimed that Moskvin planned to marry a 25-year-old native of his hometown who attended his trial.
By all means, Moskvin seemed mostly like an academic man who went a little bit too far with his research, probably due to his mental illness. We did menton that he was a genius, and many of his peers claimed so because he was also a polyglot who spoke over 13 languages, wrote several books, papers, translations that were all widely acclaimed in academic circles. He even worked as a journalist who contributed to local newspapers and publications.
The final nail in the coffin, no pun intended, was him labeling himself as a necropolist, or a cemetery expert.
Some investigators had discovered the twenty-six bodies in Moskvin's flat and garage, even recording a video showing the bodies seated on shelves and sofas in small rooms full of books, papers and other objects. Only 26 of the bodies were found, though Anatoly Moskvin was suspected for desecrating around 150 graves. The bodies were brightly dressed dolls, with their faces and limbs covered in cloth. Most belonged to women and the nameplates taken from the headstones were found there too, including instructions for making dolls and also maps of cemeteries in the region. There were some shoes found, and for some reason, Muslim graves were singled out in the robberies.
Police did not say how he had been arrested and Russian newspapers report variously that he was caught with a bag of bones, which caused the detectives to grow even more suspicious. The editor of the local newspaper to which Moskvin contributed, Alexei Yesin, claimed that he was a loner who had certain quirks but never gave indication of being up to anything too weird or disturbing as what we know. He said he had drunk from puddles, spent nights in haystacks or at abandoned farms and had once even slept in a coffin readied for a funeral. A psychiatric evaluation determined that Moskvin suffered from a form of paranoid schizophrenia. In May 2012, Moskvin was sentenced to court-ordered psychiatric evaluation and ever since has been held in a psychiatric hospital. However, even with the accurate diagnosis provided to him, many psychologists and forensics were intrigued by his case, considering it a one of a kind case of schizophrenia, in which the dead children called out to him for help.
