How Do You Practice Sim Racing? [Discussion]

As I mentioned in the video, I can't take full credit for this idea. While I had been planning on making a video on the subject, regular viewer and commenter Ted Duncan opened up a thought provoking thread on Race Department over the weekend which I advise anyone that's even remotely interested in the subject to check out. What's interesting is that Ted compares his methodology for practising his sim racing craft with that which he employed when learning to play the guitar, which is exactly how I was planning approaching the topic!

Like Ted, I'm also a musician, and have taught myself to play a fair number of instruments over the years. And in that process I've picked up a number of tips that I think are pretty applicable to sim racing. First of all, practice has to be regular, but it doesn't necessarily have to be long. When I taught myself to play the piano a couple of years ago, I found that 20 minutes practice every day was far more effective than longer sessions spread out over time. I believe that this is especially true in the early stages of learning, when you're brain is being inundated with lots of new information. Don't get me wrong, longer practice sessions have their benefits, but not at the cost of frequency. Next up, deliberate practice is best undertaken when you're alert and well rested. Ted touches on this in his thread with the mention of taking regular breaks, because tiredness leads to mistakes, which in turn lead to rage-quitting! And finally, straight from the world of music is the idea of warming up with a couple of gentle laps before getting into a proper practice plan, that way you're relaxed and comfortable before you start getting your mind to focus on deliberate practice.
