When researching keyword competition, many people fall into the same common traps. Don’t let this happen to you! Find out how to avoid these 2 keyword competition pitfalls, and see what you can do to find the perfect keywords for your niche!
If you start off your research by checking Google Adwords, don’t get the “competition” column backwards! Remember that the “High” competition rating shows how much the advertisers pay for ads using that keyword. This tool is primarily for pay traffic, so it’s not very relevant for your research. You also do not need to Google your keyword to see the amount of pages it generates! It’s a poor indicator of competition, because when it comes to making money, the results pages after the very first one don’t matter anyway! Save your effort by focusing on the first page, or even the first few hits.
Now that you know what not to do, how do you find out if your keyword is right for you? Start off by downloading SEOquake, a free plugin that will enable you to see very good criteria on your search results. When looking at the first page of your keyword’s results on Google, you’ll be able to see how many PageRanks and Backlinks each result has. You’ll want to see a PR2 or higher in the SEOquake bar underneath each result. Next, you should check the relevancy of your search results to your keyword. If there are lots of results with slightly different keywords, that’s good news for you, because it means weaker competition!
Lastly, check the quality of the content in your search results. Are the top results from “big name” authority domains, such as WalMart or eBay? Big name stores could crush you in competition, so you may want to stay away from keywords that compete with your makeshift website. If your keyword passes these 3 criteria, you’ve got a keyword worth pursuing! Make sure that it passes at least 2 criteria, although all 3 would be ideal. Now that you know what to do, it’s easy to knock out your keyword research and find a profitable market!
