#8 Saw Scaled Viper
You’ll find these reptiles slithering around Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka among other locations. They’re known for producing a ‘sizzling’ sound by rubbing their body sections together, to serve as a warning alert; think of a sound like water sizzling on a hot skillet. Although they are relatively small at 35 inches (89 cm), these critters are among the species that are responsible for inflicting a majority of snakebite cases worldwide. While the strength and amount of venom can vary, experts say the female’s venom is twice as deadly as the male’s.

#7 Deathstalker Scorpion
If this were a list of dangerous animals with the coolest names, this arachnid would definitely be number-one. But it’ll have to settle for coming in at number six. It’s found in desert habitats ranging from North Africa to the Middle East. But no matter where it’s encountered, the Deathstalker is regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous scorpions. It has an extraordinarily painful sting that delivers a powerful neurotoxic venom. While not typically lethal, a sting can prove debilitating and is very resistant to treatment with antivenom.

#6 Giant Redheaded Centipede
This animal can grow to around 8 inches or longer (21 cm), which makes it the largest centipede located in North America. You’ll find it crawling from Mexico into the deserts of the southwestern US. That unusual coloration serves as a warning to predators, and is distinguished by its unusual red head and greenish-black tail and body. While there are individual cases of its venom causing severe symptoms like heart attacks in humans, most bites result in nausea or fever.

#5 Spotted Hyena
Only four species of this mammal are known to exist, making it one of the smallest biological families in the Carnivora (kar-NIV-er-uh). But they’re known for having jaws that are strong enough to crush bone. In that regard, their bite is more powerful than that of a brown bear. Hyenas will often go for the neck, face, and spinal regions of their victims, where their teeth and jaws can inflict the most damage.

#4 Arizona Bark Scorpion
As its name indicates, this scary arachnid is found in the American Southwest and into northern Mexico. At a little over 3 inches long (8 cm), it might not seem so threatening. But this animal ranks as North America’s most venomous species of scorpion. Its venom is so strong that its prey is typically immobilized within seconds. Did you know that over 100,000 people are said to receive that sting every year? It is infamous for producing a sudden, blinding series of jolts similar to electrical shocks. But while symptoms can include numbness and respiratory complications, human fatalities are rarely reported thanks to an effective antivenom.

#3 Mojave Rattlesnake (moe-HAH-vee)
This reptile fits the image of those rattlers associated with deserts of the American Southwest. And among rattlesnakes, its venom is the deadliest overall. They can grow to around 4.5 feet long (137 cm), and depending on their surroundings their color can range from shades of brown to green. These rattlers have a reputation for becoming especially agitated when disturbed. Many sources cite the Mojave rattler as having one of the most toxic venoms of any snake in the world. That includes elapids (el-uh-pids) like the Black Mamba. Its powerful neurotoxins can produce symptoms leading to respiratory failure and death.

#2 Tarantula Hawk Wasp
The name can be a bit misleading since this creature is neither a bird nor an arachnid. It happens to be a scary-looking insect with a scary-sounding name. It’s a reference to the female’s behavior of targeting tarantulas. Once one of the spiders is caught, the mother uses its body as a feeding ground for her larvae. This is the largest species of wasp, measuring around 2 inches long (5 cm) and can be found in deserts of the American southwest. They’ve gained a fearsome reputation for inflicting one of the animal kingdom’s most painful stings. The effects have been compared to receiving several rounds of excruciating electrical shocks. Some sources rank it as the second worst painful sting ever described.
