Leslie and Lisa go to The Hainan Story - ieatishootipost
What does Kaya Toast, "Gobi", Curry Rice, Breaded Pork Chop & Chicken Rice all have in common? They are all local cuisine that we have our Hainanese forefathers to thank for! The Hainanese came to Singapore later than the other Chinese dialect groups and by then, all the good businesses were taken. They found work aboard British ships serving as chefs and cooks which is how the concept of Kaya Toast, Kopi and the breaded Pork Chops came about.
Hainan Story is a new 5-brands-in-one restaurant that features two familiar brands - Wee Nam Kee and Ah Chiang Porridge, plus 3 new brands. There is Uncle Robert which serves British Hainanese food, Newspaper Curry Rice and The Hainan Story which is the "drink stall" where you get your kopi & kaya toast.
Ordering is pretty convenient. Everything can be ordered from the self-serve ordering kiosk where you get a queue number and collect your food when your number is called.
You should definitely try the newspaper curry rice. The curry is pretty good.! It is made in the style of Kari Kapitan where only fresh herbs are used and no curry powder and the best thing is you can ask for more curry sauce without paying extra. The "Lor" is sweet and when mixed with the curry, the combination is quite shiok. There is also something about eating off "newspaper" (its food grade wax paper!) that makes the whole experience a little nostalgic too.
Their soft buns is another item not to be missed. The buns are made from a special recipe just for the eatery so you can't actually buy it from anywhere else. Though I would have preferred a more traditional coconut/egg or pandan flavoured kaya, Lisa seems to enjoy their Gula Melaka Kaya.
Hainan Story is currently only located at the Hillion Mall and judging by the queue, we can see that it is already quite a hit with the Bukit Panjangers! We look forward to seeing more Hainan story outlets across the island so the rest of us don't need to track all the way out West.
