During WW1, the ancient city of Baku, today the capital of Azerbaijan, became a battlefield. But as international forces gathered on the shores of the Caspian Sea, they weren't just fighting for land. Industrialisation and rapid advances in military technology meant that oil became a strategic commodity, and as such, Baku became the site of a new kind of modern warfare.
