It’s relatively rare for political spokespeople to emerge from the shadows of their masters, but from time to time they emerge to become personalities in their own right. In Britain, it happened with Margaret Thatcher’s spokesman, Bernard Ingham and Tony Blair’s Director of Publicity, Alastair Campbell, and in Ireland, it was PJ Mara.

Though later achieving three successive election wins for Bertie Ahern, Mara’s name will always be particularly associated with one political master: Charles J. Haughey.
