Easy Van Life Plumbing | Lifesaver Jerrycan Water Filter with Manual Hand Pump
Super Simple DIY Campervan Plumbing System with Water Purification and NO Powered Needed
We built our very simple DIY plumbing system for our VW T6 campervan conversion. We have zero plumbing experience and this was easy enough for us to do ourselves.
Our Fresh Water System:
The water is pumped using a manual hand pump to create pressure in the system so no electric power is required. We used a 20L jerry can that contains an inbuilt hand pump as well as a water filter. We chose to use this in our plumbing system because it means we can fill up our water from a non-drinking water source such as a river or lake if we don't have access to fresh water. The drinking water leaves the jerry can through a food grade hose and connects to a braided hose that leads into the tap. We've attached a quick disconnect fitting onto the hose to make it easier to remove the jerrycan when filling. We only have cold water in this plumbing system but we have used a mixer tap because we wanted this specific tap that has a pull out hose so we can use it outside the van as well as in the sink. To make sure the hot pipe doesn't leak we had to attach a stopper but if we do wish to add hot water in the future all we have to do is remove the stopper and add a pump.
We've used a standard kitchen sink rather than a campervan sink. This is because we wanted a large sink for washing up and also so that we can easily have a wash at the sink since we have no shower.
Our Grey Water System:
The grey water (waste water) system is extremely simple. We attached a p trap (u-bend) onto the sink waste, then added an overflow and waste hose connector so that we could attach a short hose pipe which drops the grey water into a 22L jerry can. U bends are normally used to prevent bad odours but this isn't as effective in a van due the movement of the vehicle. The only reason we used the u bend is because it happened to have the right connects that we needed to join the sink waste to the hose connector. We made sure to use a jerry can that has a tap on it, this means that we can just attach a hose and open the tap to drain the water rather than having to take it out to empty it.
