1. Interviewee introduction

In a remote mountain valley of Jirisan Mountain, over 1,100 meters high, lies a temple called Sangmujuam. It is said to be the place where Ven. Bojo Jinul, a prominent figure in Korean Buddhism, attained enlightenment. Ven. Hyun-gi has been devoted to practicing there for the past 16 to 17 years. Despite the rugged terrain, he cultivates crops such as potatoes and corn and eats them as his daily meals while practicing. Although his hands are calloused from the hard work, his eyes are sharp and full of life.

When I interviewed him for a newspaper article, I felt uncomfortable about taking him away from his solitary existence due to my interview. So, a few months later, I returned to Sangmujuam alone, without any notebooks or pens, and stayed with Ven. Hyungi for three days. We sat together on the veranda and gazed at the stars above the summit of Mt. Banyabong. I asked him if he ever felt lonely, to which he replied, ""People fear loneliness. They work hard, make money, and seek power and status to avoid it. But I am different. I enjoy this life. I really do.""

His words stayed with me, but I couldn't visit Sangmujuam again for a while. Then, one day, someone from the temple called me. He said that Ven. Hyun-gi wanted to see me. He said, ""How long will I live now? I want to meet with Choi Hyun once more.""
So, I postponed all my schedules, prepared food to offer to him, and climbed up to Sangmujuam again, carrying it on my back and shoulders, despite the heavy rain.

During the two nights and three days that I stayed with him, we had many conversations. Although I felt bad for filming him, he allowed me to record his Dharma talk for the viewers of Johyun TV. It is the scent of the Dharma from Jirisan Mountain, passed down by a hermit who has lived in the mountains for over 40 years.
