The Palestine War (Israeli-Palestinian Conflict)
The Palestine war refers to the long-standing and deeply rooted conflict between Israelis and Palestinians over land, sovereignty, and national identity in the region of historic Palestine, now encompassing Israel and the Palestinian territories (the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem). The conflict dates back to the early 20th century, fueled by competing nationalist movements—Zionism and Palestinian nationalism—as well as the decline of the Ottoman Empire and subsequent British colonial rule.
The first major war occurred in 1948, when the State of Israel was established. This led to a war with neighboring Arab countries and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, an event Palestinians call the Nakba ("catastrophe"). Subsequent wars in 1967 (the Six-Day War) and 1973, along with ongoing military occupation, settlement expansions, and uprisings (Intifadas), have shaped the modern conflict.
Gaza, controlled by the Palestinian group Hamas since 2007, has seen repeated outbreaks of war with Israel, most recently escalating in 2023–2024. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with widespread destruction, civilian casualties, and limited access to basic needs due to blockades and ongoing military operations.
Efforts at peace, including the Oslo Accords and international negotiations, have yet to produce a lasting resolution. The core issues remain deeply contested: borders, the status of Jerusalem, the right of return for Palestinian refugees, Israeli security, and mutual recognition.
