Here’s some good climate news!

About 40 years ago, scientists discovered a massive hole in the ozone layer, like Earth’s sunscreen protecting us from the sun’s harmful rays.

This hole was mainly caused by chemicals called CFCs found in products like refrigerators and air conditioners.

In 1987, the world signed the Montreal Protocol to stop using CFCs and other harmful substances.

By 2010, CFCs were mostly phased out. However, they were replaced with HCFCs, which are less harmful but still not great.

The plan was to completely stop using HCFCs by 2030.

Here’s the good news: a study found that HCFC levels started dropping in 2021, five years earlier than expected! This shows that our efforts are working, and the ozone layer is healing.

The Montreal Protocol is the first treaty agreed upon by every country in the United Nations.

It’s a shining example of what we can achieve together.
