Dreamlike fusions of pop purvey this album in spades, making for one of the more interesting experiences I've had listening to a rock album. The at times tormented vocals courtesy of both Kazu Makino and Amadeo Pace greatly juxtapose the pop tendencies and it's a fusion I'd be interested in hearing more of. The intro of Maki Takhashi's bass and the soft guitar playing would be the perfect intro to someone reciting a ballad, but then you hear Amadeo Pace's "I DON'T WANT YOU" which gives way to more rapid playing and drums before settling back down. It's pretty hard to believe this ended up being Blonde Redhead's first album for how well put together it is. This seems like late-blossoming career stuff, but this is something that blossomed right away. Swing Pool sounds like something Bjork would've put out, but only Blonde Redhead are capable of that kind of amazing song: the subtle silence that gives way to the two guitars dancing together, and then Makino's vocals and Simone Pace's drums entering the ballroom with their own dance. Simone Pace on the drums leaves a little to be desired, but nothing greatly deal breaking. Girl Boy is an unconventional lullaby that works as the perfect sendoff for this lovely work.
Bass guitar on "Girl Boy" was played by Skuli Sverrisson.
