STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that Foreign Minister Wang Yi would visit Russia from later that day until Thursday for a round of talks on security.

The ministry’s spokesperson Mao Ning called Wang's visit to Russia a "routine" one to hold in-depth talks on major strategic security interests.

Wang holds both the ruling Communist Party's top foreign policy post and the foreign minister post.

The trip just follows a two-day meeting between Wang and U.S. President Joe Biden’s national security advisor over the weekend in Malta.

China and Russia have grown closer in recent years as relations with the West have deteriorated for both.

When she was asked about Beijing’s latest military activity in the Taiwan Strait at a daily news briefing, Mao only said there is no such thing as a “median line” because "Taiwan is an integral part of the Chinese territory.”

Those remarks come after China’s military sent 103 warplanes toward Taiwan in a 24-hour period in what the island’s defense ministry called a recent new high.

The ministry said 40 of the planes crossed the symbolic median line between mainland China and the island.

China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has conducted increasingly large military drills in the air and waters around Taiwan as tensions have grown between the two and with the United States.

Mao also lambasted German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s remark labelling China’s President Xi Jinping as a “dictator,” saying the comment was “preposterous.”

Baerbock referred to Xi when asked how her government saw the end of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in a media interview on Friday.
