During breathing, the inhaled air moves to these air sacs but sometimes due to the inflammation of alveoli and the surrounding tissues, the sacs are already filled with pus or fluids which makes breathing difficult. This condition is known as pneumonia.

Pneumonia is easy to overcome by a healthy person, but certain group of people are more sensitive to this infection. Such as:

People who smoke regularly smokers

Newly born babies and children below the age of 2

Elderly people such as over 65 years of age

And those with weakened immune system possibly because of certain medical conditions

There are many ways of classifying pneumonia. It can be done on the basis of the part of the lungs that has been infected, such as bronchial and lobar, or it can be classified on the basis of how was the infection acquired for instance from the community, hospital or aspiration.

Types of pneumonia based on the infected area in the lungs are as following:

Bronchial pneumonia – is inflammation of the bronchial tubes in which one or both lungs get patches
Lobar Pneumonia is another classification – in which one or more of the five main lobes of the lungs are infected including all the alveoli in the affected lobe.
Hospital Acquired Pneumonia abbreviated as (HAP) – is if the pneumonia is acquired after 48 or more hours of being admitted in the hospital for another reason, it is HAP which is more serious as the patient already has another medical condition.
Community Acquired Pneumonia Which you will see abbreviated (CAP) – it is acquired from the social surroundings and does not involve health care facilities or a hospital.
Ventilator Associated Pneumonia which you will see abbreviated as (VAP) is a type of pneumonia that a patient may develop when they are on a ventilator. A ventilator is a machine that breathes for a patient. But sometimes, due to several different reasons the patient may become exposed to different disease causing agents. Which may ultimately cause an infection in the lungs or pneumonia. This is why it is so important to use sterile technique when suctioning or coming in contact with the patients tracheostomy.

Opportunistic Pneumonia – is when the infection is caused because of weakened immune system due to anther medical condition, for instance cancer, AIDS, organ transplant, etc. It occurs due to the organisms that are actually healthy for the body and not harmful.

Aspiration Pneumonia – is caused by the inhaling foods, liquids, saliva, or vomit causing bacterial infection in the lungs.
