1993 Olympic Nike Salesman Sample Restoration

Ever heard of a Nike Salesman Sample? You’re not alone. Thank goodness Vick is here to drop some sneaker knowledge. On today’s episode of Restorations with Vick, he’s going to work on a pair of Nike Force basketball shoes that just so happen to be a Salesman Sample.

A Nike Salesman Sample is essentially a shoe that was used by Nike Salesmen to get retailers to stock Nike shoes and apparel. This particular Olympic themed Nike sneaker never made it to retail.

You’ve definitely never seen these before. Let’s clean these bad boys up and see how they turn out.

As always Vick started by removing the shoelaces and insole, and inserting the Adjustable Shoe Tree. This should help push out some of the creases in the toe box area of these Nike basketball sneakers.

Before we get too far into the cleaning, Vick used his air gun to clear the surface dirt, and then started hammering the shoes with RESHOEVN8R Sneaker Cleaning Solution. Rather than starting with the uppers, Vick targeted the soles first.

After scrubbing the soles with the Stiff Bristle Brush, Vick delicately cleaned the rest of the sneaker with the Soft Bristle Brush. One great thing about the RESHOEVN8R Sneaker Cleaning Solution is that the natural oils in it help to condition materials such as leather. The preliminary clean not only left the Nike Force basketball sneakers looking better, but it reconditioned the dry leather too.

To remove some of the sole yellowing, Vick stuck the sneakers in the Vick 2000 indoor UV setup. The UV rays are powerful enough to remove mild yellowing with needing to apply RESHOEVN8R Sole Revive.

Vick wanted to keep this pair as OG as possible, so he decided not to repaint the entire sneaker. Instead Vick focused on the white leather portion of the upper. He used 400 grit and 600 grit sandpaper to remove some of the deeper scratches from the uppers, and then used a lint shaver to clean up the sockliner.

After wiping the sneakers down with some alcohol prep pads and a quick tape job to cover up the Nike Swoosh and other non-white areas, it’s time to lay down some paint.

Vick painstakingly painted each panel one by one to avoid losing the integrity of the original design of the sneaker. Then he touched up the red Nike Swoosh by hand.

One awesome trick Vick used to keep the shoe looking vintage was taping off the glue marks to avoid painting over them. Overall Vick did a great job at maintaining the vintage look and feel while still giving this pair some new life.

Cleaning the shoe laces might have been the most laborious process of the whole restoration. Vick soaked them in water and Solution with a RESHOEVN8R Laundry Pod, but didn’t get the results he wanted, so then he threw them in the Vick 2000 to make them even more white. Then he used a lint shaver to clean them up, and ironed them to make them crisp again.

All in all the shoes turned out great. These Nike Force Salesman Sample basketball sneakers still look aged and vintage, but not beat. The goal was to make them look as if they’d only aged naturally, and we’d say Vick accomplished that for sure.
