Cryobattery - storing renewable energy as liquid air: RAZOR
One of the biggest challenges with renewable energy is storing it. The surplus energy created when the sun is shining and wind is blowing is normally lost as it's very difficult to store such large amounts of energy.
Shini Somara investigates a new way to store this surplus energy as liquid air. It can then be expanded from a liquid back into a gas through electricity-generating turbines when energy is needed. Professor Yulong Ding led the initial stage of technology development with Highview Power, who plan to open one of Europe's largest energy storage facilities in the UK later this year.
