Theories of Foreign Policy and International Relations (Part 1/12)

**This is part 1/12 of the course "Diplomatic Practice and Foreign Policy Formulation."

How there is no theorizing as such on foreign policy formulation, except as an offshoot of Realism, with its defense of state interests; how diplomacy serves state interests; but how the formulation of policy can be a vexed and problematic multi-actor affair.

Stephen Chan is a George Soros Visiting Chair at the CEU School of Public Policy (SPP) and a professor of politics and international relations at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). He is the author of 29 books and has written most recently on Robert Mugabe, Southern Africa, and China-Africa relations. He has twice been dean of SOAS.
