Maxine Waters' 'confrontational' comments could provide Chauvin with grounds for appeal

Provocative comments from Maxine Waters calling on Americans to “get more confrontational” has triggered criticism from the defence lawyers and judge presiding over the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin.

The Democratic representative said, “we’ve got to stay on the street and we’ve got to get more active. We’ve got to get more confrontational. We’ve got to make sure that they know that we mean business”.

During the trial Defence Lawyer Eric Nelson commented on the politicisation of the case saying it was “mind boggling” to have a “US representative threatening acts of violence”.

Judge Peter Cahill agreed comments made by the veteran Democrat could possibly provide the defence with grounds to appeal the verdict.

"I'll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result on this whole trial being overturned,” he said.

Crowds are gathering in Minneapolis as the jury draw closer to delivering a verdict on the death of African American man George Floyd - who died when he was arrested in May last year.
