Manolo Blahnik in conversation with André Leon Talley
On September 15, 2015, famed shoe designer Manolo Blahnik sat with André Leon Talley (the former American editor-at-large for Vogue magazine) for a night of conversation about Mr. Blahnik's influences and inspirations over the years—the theme behind Rizzoli New York's new book "Manolo Blahnik: Fleeting Gestures and Obsessions".
"The well-appointed back room of Rizzoli on Broadway and 26th Street was filled to capacity on Friday as more than 100 chicer-than-average listeners crowded together to take in a conversation between two titans of their industries: André Leon Talley and Manolo Blahnik. Nominally, the talk, the first ever held at this Rizzoli location, was meant to promote Talley’s book on the life’s work of the legendary footwear designer—Manolo Blahnik: Fleeting Gestures and Obsessions—a venerable and massive tome that looks nearly as expensive as one of Mr. Blahnik’s highly coveted creations. What actually transpired was a volley of Old Hollywood film references, ’70s heyday nostalgia, the most endearing sort of name-dropping, and a plundering of Mr. Blahnik’s inspirations and fixations, all getting at the driving question: Where do the shoes come from?
The answer in brief: movies, women, and women in movies. “Through the book,” Talley announced to the audience by way of introduction, “you really find out the person, the references, the obsession,” of Mr. Blahnik." —Vogue.com
Please enjoy this excerpt of the evening's event—the first to take place at the new Rizzoli Bookstore on Broadway at 26th Street in New York City.
