Wild Bobwhite Quail In Mexico

One thing that has really stood out the last few seasons here in northern Mexico is just how strong the wild bobwhite quail population has been.

Typically this region of Tamaulipas runs pretty dry. When the rains don’t come, quail struggle. The chicks depend heavily on insects during their first weeks of life, and without rain there simply aren’t enough bugs on the ground to support large broods. Water can also become a problem. Quail are creatures of habit and will continue visiting the same watering spots they’ve always used, even if those holes dry up, rather than roaming long distances searching for new water.

But when the rain shows up, everything changes.

Rain brings insects. Rain fills the tanks and ponds. Rain thickens up the native brush and grasses that give quail both food and cover. When those conditions line up, survival rates for young birds go way up and coveys start to build.

That’s exactly what we’ve been seeing the last few years. Our quail hunting has always been strong down here, but with the recent rainfall patterns the population has absolutely exploded.

Massive coveys, non-stop action, and some of the best wild bobwhite hunting you’ll find anywhere.
