Elif Shafak is one of Turkey’s most popular and outspoken novelists. She was born in 1971 and is the author of six novels, including The Forty Rules of Love,

These Forty Rules described here are in fact principles and standards set by Shams Tabraiz while spending forty days with Molana Jalal UD Din Rumi.

Shams of Tabriz was a Persian Sufi and roaming dervish who lived at the end of the 12th & early 13th century. He was the spiritual teacher and Guide of Rumi,
Rumi was a professor & transformed into a mystic,a lover, and a poet by Shams. Rumi was taught by Shams in seclusion for 40 days, and the period after this is described as Rumi’s ‘mysticism’,

Rumi's Poetry is revolve around the Love of God,
His poetry has opened doors of heart that were closed within many people, and he has described God, love, and life in the most fascinating ways. However, we rarely talk about the person behind Rumi’s inspiration,
Rumi, who was a scholar ,met Shams Tabrizi who was a wandering dervish.
Rumi’s encounter with Shams had transformed Rumi to a mystical poet. In other words, without Shams in Rumi’s life, the Rumi we know wouldn’t exist.

Shams Tabrizi’s 40 rules of love that contains the Sufi wisdom within them. They’re enlightening and mind-blowing at the same time,
