EXEMPLARY: 150 YEARS OF THE MAK -- FROM ARTS AND CRAFTS TO DESIGN
To mark the museum's jubilee, the MAK presents an inspiring juxtaposition between the tradition-steeped MAK Collection and contemporary avant-garde design.
At the MAK's invitation, nine globally renowned design pioneers have agreed to participate in an experiment to investigate the significance of a model exemplary collection as a source of inspiration, which was the original motivation for founding the museum. In the process, each pioneer will have discussions with a person of their choice—so-called "muses"—in which they will shed light on the future of the applied arts as well as on the perspectives of museums dedicated to the subject.

The influencial trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort acts as a consultant for global brands, cities and governments. Her trend portfolios are eagerly sought after as sources of inspiration both for the fashion and textile industry and for contemporary product design. She is an independent thinker and globetrotter, thus able to seismographically sense, consistently formulate and creatively mediate the developments of our time. Her work at the Dutch Design Academy Eindhoven at the turn of the century led to a re-orientation: her critical scrutiny of industrial production methods and consumer culture paved the way to a quest for alternative approaches in design. Both the rediscovery of handicraft and forgotten cultural techniques paired with new technologies, also an experimental approach to design formed the basis as a catalyst for the work of such designers as Maarten Baas, Nacho Carbonell, or Formafantasma, all of them graduates of the Design Academy Eindhoven. But also young talents from Iceland, Brazil and Afghanistan are deemed exemplary by Lidewij Edelkoort. Her choice of design models mirrors her intuitive antennae for current developments. She juxtaposes the works of young talents with those of established names like Rei Kawakubo who are sounding out the boundaries to art poised on the cutting edge of contemporary trends. Their objects are aesthetically appealing reflections which act as icons of the zeitgeist.
