In this video I take you through a new experience where I photographed a building's exterior utilizing over 40 layers of flash photography and bring it together in one final composite. The project took about an hour to shoot, and about 2.5 hours to edit.
This type of layering can be applied to real estate shoots, architecture, or commercial properties. I used the Sony 12-24mm F4 on a Sony A7R III. The bulk of the images were captured at F/5.6, modifying the shutter speed as the ambient light changed. The sky photos are 30 second exposures using a 6 stop ND filter. For the interior flash photos I used a Godox AD200 with a magmod magbeam with a 1/2 CTO to get a warm glow from the offices. On the exterior I used the AD200 with just the fresnel head. In photoshop I layered the images, starting with the sky, then the exterior of the building, then the windows, and finally the exterior elements. I masked each layer individually to keep what I want and hide the rest. The only foreign element added is the sun flare. While my edit is linked above I'm not sure this is the most effective way to edit this type of project as it took me quite a while, then again, I'm also not used to doing edits of this type.
Lastly, yes you can get a similar interior glow by turning all the lights on and photographing it at twilight, however that didn't work for this building very well as the offices had different levels of tint and different color temperature lighting throughout, so I would have had to mask it off and adjust it anyways.
