Earnings, earnings, earnings are the key when it comes to long-term stock market investing. Earnings are Peter Lynch's investing focus and also Buffett's. It is remarkable how a stock's investment returns are perfectly correlated to its earnings line. Of course, in various market circumstances the PE ratio (price to earnings ratio) or even better, the CAPE ratio (cyclically adjusted PE ratio) can vary and that leads to temporary divergences, but earnings are key long-term.
