Oral History: Daniel Inouye

Medal of Honor recipient and US Senator Daniel Inouye discusses his experiences in World War II with Dr. Gordon "Nick" Mueller, CEO of The National WWII Museum, in his Senate office in Washington D.C., May 14, 2012. Senator Inouye reflects with Dr. Mueller on being at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941; how his life changed as a result; his joining the 442nd Regimental Combat Team made up completely of young Nisei in 1943; his experiences in the Deep South as a young soldier in training; his experiences in combat in Italy and France; his heroic actions at San Terenzo, Italy, in April 1945 that lead to him receiving the Medal of Honor; and the meaning of World War II to his fellow Americans today.
