ML824 Pembroke Docks last Sunderland
ML824 Pembroke Docks last Sunderland.
In this video I visit RAF Museum in Hendon, London to take a look at the Short Sunderland Flying Boat that is housed there in the main hanger.
A few years back I used to live in Pembroke Dock and was intrigued by the history of the dockyards, in particular the RAF Base there and the Sunderland Hangers which sill remain to this day. I then learned that during the 1960's A Sunderland Flying Boat had been displayed in the town as a 'Gate Guardian', on Grounds near the church in the Dockyard, however it had fallen into disrepair and was handed over to the RAF for repairs.
After a bit of searching on Google I tracked it down to the RAF Museum in Hendon, and had to go for a visit!
The Sunderland has been restored to a very good state, and is now a static display inside Hanger 1 in the museum. It is set up so you can actually go inside it on the lower decks, which gives a great feel for what it must have been like to crew this aircraft - its very cramped!
The museum displays some history relating to crew members based at Pembroke Dock, and as you travel through the aircraft there is a voice guide which is the daughter of one of the crew stationed at Pembroke Dock during the War.
I thoroughly enjoyed the visit, and if you like Aircraft or are interested in the History of Pembroke Dock - Dockyard it's well worth a visit. Entry to the museum is also free.
Below are some links to the museum Website, and also The Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre - The Sunderland trust, which is now based in the Dockyard near to where the Sunderland used to stand Guard.
Stay Tuned, and if you haven't already - Subscribe, I have more RAF related content coming over the next few weeks.
Thank you for watching.
