Dollywood: The Truth About Dolly Parton's Theme Park

While Disneyland is officially "the Happiest Place on Earth," the actual happiest place on Earth — or at least in Tennessee — has to be Dollywood. It’s a unique theme park with a wild story, so here's a lot of stuff you didn't know about America's most down-home entertainment destination.

Even though Dolly Parton poured a substantial fortune into the theme park in the mid-1980s and agreed to be its face, Dollywood isn't the property of the woman who wrote both "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" on the same day. Parton is merely a co-owner and a partner in the business, albeit an active and hands-on one. The Dollywood complex is owned primarily and operated by Herschend Family Entertainment.

Like Disney or Six Flags, Herschend controls a vast portfolio of theme parks and tourist traps, of which Dollywood is simply one entry. The company also controls Silver Dollar City, Taking Rocks Cavern, and White Water in Branson, Missouri. Plus, there's Wild Adventures and Stone Mountain Park in Georgia, an aquarium in Cincinnati, and various resorts and theme restaurants, including Dolly Parton's Stampede.
