How to Turn a Photo Into a Loose, Expressive Seascape

Join me, Lynn Keddie, as I paint expressively and share tips to help you bring more freedom and feeling into your art.

In this video, I start a seascape painting from a photograph — but instead of copying detail, I block in just a few simple lines to mark out the basic shapes. This keeps the painting open, fresh, and full of movement. From there, I build the work up in several layers of paint, letting each one add depth, texture, and atmosphere.

If you struggle with paintings that feel stiff or overworked, this approach will help you loosen up and discover how expressive a seascape can be.
