Market Ambassador Program

Petaluma Bounty and the farmers markets that are part of the Farmers Market Local Incentive for Food and Economy (FM LIFE) are excited to share the progress of the farmers market ambassador program. The program aims to increase equity and access at farmers markets. As we like to say, bringing the community to the market and the market to the community.

The program was borne out of a Farmers Market Promotion Program grant that looked at how to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion at farmers markets in Sonoma and northern Marin County. The ambassadors work for a coalition and are able to focus primarily on community engagement. They meet weekly to share experiences at the market, brainstorm collectively future programs and actions, and work collectively to implement initiatives that were identified out of the initial FMPP grant. This has included custom bilingual payments-accepted signage for vendors, the execution of Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program and a senior California Nutrition Incentive Program, data collection using University of Wisconsin’s Farm 2 Facts, and organizing and leading service provider tours.

As part of this workshop, we will share the process of developing the program and hiring the ambassadors, what the onboarding process was like, current areas of strengths and growth, and areas of focus for the future.
