My Parkinson's Story: Genetics
Young onset of Parkinson's Disease (PD) -- is it hereditary?
Veterans who develop PD under the age of 45 years likely have a larger genetic component to their disease as compared with the older person who develops PD.
For those who have young-onset PD, it is not likely from a single gene but could be a combination of genetics and environmental exposure. Genetics in PD is still evolving and testing is not useful at this time. If done, it requires specific genetic counseling.
