Operation Glacier Two: The Rescue of Royal Marine Lance Corporal Mathew Ford | January 2007
In January 2007, the Royal Marines of 45 Commando, 3rd Commando Brigade, launched Operation Glacier Two in Helmand, Afghanistan. The target was Jugroom Fort and, after encountering stiff resistance, the Marines withdrew back to their Forward Operating Base.
However, on completion of the withdrawal, it was realised Lance Corporal Mathew Ford was Missing in Action. Subsequently, a rescue operation, involving three Royal Marines, a Royal Engineer and four Apache Helicopters was authorised to recover Lance Corporal Ford.

To address some questions as to why I didn't mention a possible blue-on-blue incident leading to Lance Corporal Mathew Ford becoming wounded; a post operational-investigation was unable to state with definitive certainty that the wounds L/Cpl Ford inflicted were fired from a British soldier.
A Royal Navy report, dated 19 December 2007, states:
"L/Cpl Ford died from gunshot wounds and although the Board [of Inquiry] were unable to state categorically that the fatal rounds were fired from an Armoured Support Company Viking, the weight of evidence suggest it is possible."
A Ministry of Defence report, dated 15 August 2008, adds:
"The [Board of Inquiry] was unable to confirm, with certainty, which weapon fired the shots."
So while it is possible that L/Cpl Ford was hit by friendly-fire, it is, unfortunately, just that - a possibility. It's not been proven as fact and the investigation was inconclusive.
