Dell Did Something Mostly Right: Power Supply Tear-Down & Review (Dell G5 5000)
The Dell G5 gaming PC was only mostly terrible, but it did have a surprisingly good PSU. We're tearing down the pre-built gaming PC's power supply & teaching about power supplies.

Note: We open the power supply in this video. We are trained professionals and take all necessary precautions when opening power supplies and other devices. Do not open a power supply unless you are an informed professional, as it can be dangerous.
You can see the full saga of the Dell G5 5000 - Part one on component choice & support: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DMg6hUudHE
Part two on benchmarks & bloatware: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5N7aYtkzKJc
We even reviewed the included GPU in our standardized GPU test bench: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFaJZq13tr8
Dell’s G5 gaming PC failed our review, but not everything was bad. The (almost) 12VO 500W power supply, made by LiteOn, tested well with a surprising efficiency curve, reasonable voltage ripple and regulation, and responsive OPP and OCP. The OEM PSU’s efficiency touched on 80 PLUS Platinum and Titanium. There’s no scam like Dell’s billing, but we do get sneaky and include some educational content explaining rails in a PSU, especially single vs. multiple 12V. During the teardown we look at the build quality and components like the Toshiba APFC MOSFETs. We try to figure out why Dell used ATX 12V and PCIe connectors and then made a proprietary connector for the motherboard. Features the LiteOn L500EPM.
