Metabolism Past and Future, Images from a Utopian Past --Full Lecture--

--initially presented as "Images from a Utopian Past: A Contextualization of the Metabolist Movement"--

Metabolism was a branch of Japanese Modernism that infused biological notions of systematic growth into architecture and later the urban fabric in the form of, first monolithic superstructures, and later urban planning.

The talk will begin with a brief introduction to the Architectural Metabolists, and then go on to discuss many of the newer Void Metabolists, and how a movement that had initially been focused on singular monolithic structures has redefined itself to distribute its influence at the scale of the greater city.

In addition to pictures taken in observance of the early structures, the talk will draw on material from Western and Japanese Architects and Urban Theorists in an attempt to tie a thread between the worlds of Japanese and Western Natural Philosophy.

Note: A couple of the slides ended up being overexposed, so if you’re interested check out the full slideshow at https://www.harrisonmarek.com/metabolismpastandfuture
