Rethinking Political Correctness | Corinna Fales | TEDxWoodinville
NOTE FROM TED: This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of the nervous system and behavior. Several claims about infant cognition and perception misrepresent the current state of research. We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf
In this short, provocative talk, Corinna describes research on babies that reveals an innate human disposition that we often manifest as racism. She links this discovery to our physiological makeup and explains why political correctness could promote racism rather than reducing it. To generate a genuine, refreshing reset at the personal level, she offers a simple step forward to respect everyone. The daughter of Berlin Jews who barely escaped the Nazis, Corinna grew up at the first historically black university, where her father taught, and in the adjoining poor community. She lived and worked in Newark and Harlem, was jailed for sit-ins and civil rights organizing, and has personally witnessed pervasive abuse of Black folks. In 1995, Corinna began her writing/editing career with a published research report for the Library of Congress. Since then, she has served multiple educational and governmental entities as a writer/editor and authored two books on diversity-related issues. She delivered a keynote for MLK Day to the administrative personnel of Duke University’s hospitals and has been interviewed for podcasts and magazines. Her first book, Different: Our Universal Longing for Community, is interview-based and set at Lincoln University, where Corinna grew up. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
