Causing a stir outside London's Borough Market one Saturday afternoon, Darius Luke Thompson and Oshan "Danger" Mahony, better known as The Turbans, were holding a captive audience of 150 people when Matt stumbled upon them. True buskers, this striking pair have travelled the world with their unique flair for entertaining.
Classically trained musicians, taking roots from Turkey, Israel, India and UK, their music is a way of life, a means to travel, a tool and reason to meet people and perform to anyone who will listen. There are no egos, no false perceptions or masks, they perform as they speak and act, honest, intellectual and full of energy.
Opening the Session with one of two animations, the animation was inspired by The Turbans' free spirit and nomadic characters, using paper - 3 dimensional visuals created out of a 2 dimensional material.
Finding a location in the middle of a damp and dreary London winter proved no end of issues. The day was a typical wet and windy London Winter's day made for staying indoors but Darius and Oshan, with Matt and Joe, were eager to busk for the crowds at Columbia Road Flower Market. Escaping the rain, after some cheeky negotiating with the owner, the guys performed in a tiny nook of a market stall Oyster Bar for customers and passers by.
Next it was onto Brick Lane and the Backyard Food Market where the guys entertained a packed food hall of Sunday shoppers. Having only recently returned to London from Turkey, all the money the guys made from their busking went towards their plans to return to India.
The Turbans hope to be back in the UK in the next few months in time for some eagerly anticipated festival appearances. Check them out.
