The Clash ~ Rock The Casbah 1982 Extended Meow Mix
I was all about this one back in 1982. The Clash formed in 1976 as part of the original wave of punk rock with Joe Strummer (née John Grahmam Mellor), Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Nicky Headon were the members of the classic line up who recorded "Combat Rock". The band was fairly popular in the UK, regularly scoring top 40 hits hitting #11 UK with "London Calling" the first song of theirs I heard. Their next big hit was "Train In Vain" that landed them on the US survey posting at #23. I personally loved the single "This Is Radio Clash" and then the next thing I hear from them was "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" a rocking sentiment shared by anyone who is having trouble in a relationship, that only got to #45 US but has become a club favorite since. The last single issued from "Combat Rock" was "Rock The Casbah". At the time the Iran/Iraq war was on and the Iran Hostage Crisis was still fresh in our collective minds, so a song about rocking the casbah seemed to be quite relevant then and now. The single peaked at #8 on the Hot100 and Billboard Disco Top 80. It is their most popular US entry. After that success, Headon was asked to leave the band and took his heroin addiction with him. This caused friction between Strummer and Jones about the direction the band was taking. The anger continued to build during 1983 when Jones was dropped from the band and new members were added, "Cut The Crap" used session players to complete the recordings. Jones and Strummer worked together on their solo projects swapping production and writing responsibilities. In 1991, "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" was re-released in the UK and it became the band's first and only #1 UK single. Later on that same year, "Rock The Casbah" became the adopted theme of US bomber pilots in the Gulf War. With all this positive reinforcement, the ex members of the Clash were in talks to reunite, however Strummer died of a congenital heart defect on December 22, 2002. The Clash were inducted into the Hall Of Fame in March, 2003.
