Memphis to Chicago: Jr Parker's Sun Sides
This lesson looks at the hugely influential Sun recordings by Little Junior's Blue Flames (Junior Parker) with Pat Hare or Floyd Murphy on guitar on guitar. This stuff is like a bolt of lightning sparking off rock and roll, rockabilly and a new kind of electric blues. There are two songs in E: Love My Baby and Mystery Train, and then two boogies in A, Feel so Good and Feel so Bad. Pat Hare is a bit like Robert Lockwood in that his evolution as a player started with deep Delta roots (Robert Johnson in the case of Robert Lockwood, and John Lee Hooker and proto- RL Burnside droning boogies in the case of Pat Hare) and went on to really sophisticated jazzy playing-- check out this video of Pat Hare in prison to see what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2JIR... There's a longer clip from Minnesota Public Television out there too that's well worth seeking out.
I'll also talk about ways to play this type of boogie with a pick (see the James Cotton "I Feel so Good" recordings on Verve and elsewhere with Luther Tucker) and the way Magic Sam brought a greater, city-fied intensity to the Memphis electric boogie in A.
