Ultra Rare Vietnam War Footage | Assault on Hamburger Hill (CBS Archives 1969)

This film taken during the Battle of Hamburger Hill during the Vietnam War, and the reason it's choppy is that it's raw footage never shown on TV. This video comes from the CBS Archives, and has been seen by a small number of people ever.

The battle took place between May 10 and May 20, 1969. The soldiers in this film are from 3/187th Inf. Regt. 101st Airborne Division.

My grandpa, Timothy Logan, is actually present in the footage, and is also in the thumbnail. He appears around 3:58 firing an M-60 machine gun. You can hear him firing at enemy soldiers during some of the interviews.

The blurred interview was with Col. Weldon (Blackjack) Honeycutt.

The 3/87th Inf. Regt. (Rakassans) 101st Airborne Div, were awarded the Valorous Unit Citation in the April of 1969 for its battle with the 6th NVA Regiment on Dong Ngai Mountain (Hill 1485) in Ashau Valley. They were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its battle with the 29th Regiment (reinforced) on Dong Ap Bia Mountain (Hill 937) in the Ashau Valley, better known as Hamburger Hill. The Rakassans (3/187 Inf. Regt.) are the only unit in the US Army to be awarded the Valorous Unit Citation Presidential Unit Citation in less than a 30 day period.

*The footage was taken on the Battalion Command Post, which was about a klick (kilometer) from the main forces engage on the Hill.

This is in honor of Myles Westman, Timothy Logan, and all the soldiers that fought in the battle, including those who lost their lives in the midst of battle or in the years afterwards.
