Watching Volcán de Fuego Explode in Guatemala 🌋
Located in the heart of Guatemala, the Fuego volcano acts like a restless giant that never truly sleeps. It is a stratovolcano, which means it is built like a massive layer cake made of hardened lava and ash, reaching high into the clouds where the air is thin and cold. While most volcanoes stay quiet for decades, Fuego stays busy by releasing small bursts of gas and steam almost every hour, acting like a pressure valve for the earth. The spectacular display seen at night is caused by gas bubbles trapped in the molten rock that suddenly expand and pop, throwing glowing bits of lava into the air like a fountain of liquid fire.
The glowing red rivers crawling down the mountain are actually lava flows that move slowly but carry incredible heat, often reaching temperatures over 1000°C. As this molten rock hits the cooler air, it begins to harden into dark stone, constantly changing the shape of the mountain peak. These eruptions often create huge mushrooms of gray ash that can travel for miles, reminding everyone nearby of the intense energy stored deep beneath the ground. For the hikers watching from a safe distance on the neighboring peaks, the experience is a rare front row seat to the recycling process of our planet, where new land is literally being created right before their eyes.
