GTRE Finally Commences Work on 100kN Engine | Garud Commandos to Receive Special Drones
Description
In a major boost to India's "Atmanirbhar Bharat" initiative in defense, the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) has officially initiated the development of a powerful 100kN thrust class engine. This engine, often referred to as the Kaveri 2.0 or a derivative aimed at high-performance fighters, is designed to eventually replace imported powerplants in India's indigenous fighter fleets like the [HAL Tejas](https://idrw.org/kaveri-2-0-engine-revival-gtre-plans-indigenous-power-boost-for-tejas-mk1a-replacement-in-the-2030s/).
Simultaneously, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is enhancing the tactical capabilities of its elite Garud Commando Force. A new request for information (RFI) has been issued for ultra-light, high-altitude micro UAVs. These backpack-portable drones are specifically designed for extreme terrains like the Himalayas, capable of operating at altitudes up to 16,400 feet and in temperatures as low as -20°C, providing real-time situational awareness and stealthy surveillance for special operations.
