Movile cave was discovered in 1986 and is one of the most important caves in Romania. The cave was noted for the unique ecosystem in the world that has been discovered here, drawing attention to and among NASA researchers (comparing the 1990s underground in Movile with the Martian one in the 1990s).

Until 1990, when exploring the cave, the 12,000 square meters were completely isolated from changes in the outside environment.

The ecosystem is supposed to have been separated from the outside environment for approximately 5.5 million years, chemosynthesis is the process underlying the system's operation.

The research (biospeological, geological and exploratory) was led by Cristian Lascu, Stefan Sarbu and Radu Popa (GESS members). In the early 1990s, 35 completely new biospeology species were discovered.

On the surface of the sulphurous water in the cave, the presence of a layer of a few millimeters thick of white, creamy substance was observed. It was found to be a nutritional organic substance, in which there were many organisms, especially small snails and worms.

The species found in this cave are most of the arthropods belonging to the Arachnida, Crustacea, Myriapoda and Insecta classes. Among the aquatic species, the specimens belong to Phyla Plathelmintes (worms), Nematoda (worms), Rotifera, Annelida (segmented worms).

This cave is populated by raptors who take their nutrients from the few Nematoda species (worms) and Annelida (segmented worms), which, in turn, depend on chemically synthesizing organisms.

New predator species such as two pseudoscorpions, one miriapod, four spiders, and a scorpion of water, the lizard living on the worms and a centipede about five centimeters long, have been discovered. (A spider whose only nearby relative is found in the Canary Islands)

From a geological point of view, the cave is located in the Moesica platform and dates back to the Quaternary.
Having a total length of 300 meters is considered relatively small, with narrow passages that make up a labyrinth of low, 1-2 meter galleries with a rounded profile, dug in oolytic limestone and Sarmatian limestone.

The underground environment is very rich in hydrogen sulphide (8-12 mg / l), the oxygen level is quite low (max 10%), the carbon dioxide level is high (2-3.5%) while the methane level is enough (1-2%). The water in the cave has a different chemical composition than the nearby fountains, and in the sediment of the cave there were no radioactive isotopes common in the soil of Romania after the 1986 Chernobyl accident.

The entrance to the cave is made by an artificial dredge followed by about 200m of labyrinthic dry galleries with a rounded profile (1-2m in height) and flooded (the siphons being represented by 3 relatively small air bells).

The cave is closed with concrete, the access being possible only to the researchers.
