Overweight Siberian tigers become online sensation in China

Photos showing "chubby and plump" tigers at the Siberian Tiger Park in northeast China's Harbin City have been widely shared online. In the photos, these big cats are apparently much fatter than normal, and resemble inflated balloons. Some netizens ridiculed the big cats by saying they should lose weight, and some compared these tigers with their own cats. There were also people speaking out in defense of them, with one netizen saying "don't tease these tigers, they were just like you after having too many Spring Festival treats".

But netizens are also concerned about the health of these tigers. Liu Dan, chief engineer of the park, said their worries are reasonable but not warranted. Gaining weight for Siberian tigers is normal during winter, and breeders intentionally flesh them up during the coldest months of the year.
